Head Coach for After School Programs

Asana Climbing Gym, Boise, ID

Position Type: Part-Time

Position Summary

The Head Coach for After School Programs is responsible for overseeing the coaches role in the development, organization, and delivery of Asana Climbing Gym’s (ACG) youth programs. This role is integral to ensuring that all youth programs align with ACG’s business goals and core values while fostering a fun, safe, and engaging environment for participants.

The Head Coach will lead by example, providing vision and leadership to the coaching team while cultivating a culture of learning and collaboration. They will be the central figure in maintaining high-quality programming through lesson planning, team management, and student progress tracking. By acting as the main point of contact for parents, the Head Coach ensures seamless communication between the gym, coaching staff, and families.

Primary Responsibilities

Leadership and Vision

  • Vision Alignment: Clearly understand and communicate how youth programs contribute to ACG’s goals and vision, inspiring the coaching team to embrace and embody these values.
  • Team Leadership: Serve as a role model and mentor to assistant coaches, fostering a culture of collaboration, professionalism, and continuous improvement.

Program Coordination and Daily Planning

  • Lesson Plans: Create and organize engaging lesson plans for each class, ensuring they are age-appropriate, skill-specific, and aligned with program goals.
  • Task Delegation: Assign responsibilities to coaching staff, such as leading stretches, organizing games, supervising specific groups, or teaching particular skills.
  • Daily Pre-Shift Meetings: Facilitate pre-shift meetings to review daily plans, address any challenges, and ensure all coaches are prepared for their roles.

Student Safety and Progress Tracking

  • Safety and Supervision: Ensure all students are accounted for and safe during classes, maintaining a strong focus on injury prevention and proper technique.
  • Progress Monitoring: Track the progress of individual students and class groups, identifying areas for improvement and adjusting lesson plans as needed.
  • Student Information Management: Maintain up-to-date records of students' info sheets, waivers, and any pertinent medical information, ensuring all coaches are aware of relevant details.

Training and Development

  • Staff Onboarding: Assist in training and onboarding new coaching staff, providing clear expectations and guidance on delivering high-quality youth programming
  • Professional Growth: Foster a culture of professional development by encouraging ongoing education, skill-building, and collaboration among the coaching team.

Parent Communication

  • Parent Liaison: Act as the primary point of contact for parents, addressing questions, concerns, or feedback in a professional and timely manner.
  • Progress Updates: Provide regular updates to parents on their child’s progress, milestones, and areas of improvement.
  • Customer Service: Ensure parents feel valued and included in the program, maintaining open and transparent communication channels.

Qualifications/Skills:

Climbing and Coaching Expertise

  • Climbing Ability: Medium-level climbing skills and a passion for climbing.
  • Teaching Proficiency: Strong understanding of beginner and intermediate climbing techniques with the ability to accurately teach them.
  • Coaching Experience: Prior experience coaching youth climbing programs is preferred.

Communication and Leadership

  • Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication skills with kids, parents, and co-workers, both in person and via email.
  • Leadership Abilities: Demonstrated ability to lead a team, inspire confidence, and create a supportive environment for both staff and participants.
  • Emotional Intelligence: Displays empathy, patience, and non-reactiveness when working with children, parents, and staff.

Organizational Skills

  • Task Management: Exceptional organizational and task management skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities effectively.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong focus on accuracy in lesson planning, student records, and safety measures.

  • Positive Attitude: Energetic and optimistic with a solutions-focused mindset.

Hours and Compensation:

  • Hours: 10-20 hours per week, depending on program needs and seasonality.
  • Compensation: $13- $17/hour (based on experience).

Reporting Structure

The Head Coach reports to the Programs Lead.

Preferred Experience (Not Required)

  • Prior experience as a climbing coach or instructor in a youth-focused program.
  • Familiarity with climbing program management tools or software.
  • Certifications in climbing instruction, coaching, or safety.

Climbing Programs Lead

Asana Climbing Gym, Boise, Idaho

Position Type: Part-Time

Position Summary

The Climbing Programs Lead is responsible for aligning all climbing programs at Asana Climbing Gym (ACG) with the organization’s business goals and core values. This individual will be the driving force behind developing, implementing, and maintaining high-quality youth and adult climbing programs that engage participants, foster skill development, and build community. Working closely with the management team and climbing instructors, the Programs Lead will ensure accountability, consistency, and ongoing improvement in program delivery and curriculum development.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for climbing, strong leadership abilities, and excellent communication and organizational skills. They will focus on creating a safe, welcoming, and growth-oriented environment while inspiring a team of instructors and coaches to embody ACG’s vision and values.

Primary Responsibilities

Program Oversight and Development

  • Curriculum Design: Develop, organize, and update climbing curricula for youth and adult programs, including beginner and intermediate classes, camps, and clinics.
  • Program Evaluation: Track and analyze program metrics, such as participation rates, customer feedback, and skill progression, to measure success and identify areas for improvement.
  • Community Engagement: Ensure climbing programs foster a sense of belonging and align with the gym's mission to build a thriving community.
  • Marketing: Coordinate with our marketing manager to drive engagement and sales.

Staff Management and Development

  • Instructor Training: Plan and deliver regular training sessions for instructors and coaches to improve technical knowledge, teaching methods, and safety protocols.
  • Accountability: Hold instructors accountable for delivering high-quality programming and embodying ACG’s values.
  • Mentorship: Act as a role model and mentor for instructors and coaches, encouraging their personal and professional growth.

Communication and Coordination

  • Internal Communication: Collaborate with management to align programs with gym-wide goals and initiatives.
  • Customer Communication: Respond to parent and participant inquiries regarding programs, schedules, and goals in a timely and professional manner.
  • Scheduling: Oversee the scheduling of classes, coaches, and program events to ensure seamless operation and coverage.

Safety and Compliance

  • Risk Management: Ensure all programs meet ACG’s safety standards, including proper use of equipment and adherence to industry best practices.
  • Incident Management: Handle any incidents or conflicts that arise in a calm, professional manner, documenting and escalating when necessary.

Qualifications/Skills:

Climbing and Coaching Expertise

  • Climbing Ability: Medium-level climbing skills (around V4) and a passion for climbing.
  • Teaching Proficiency: A solid understanding of beginner and intermediate climbing techniques and the ability to accurately teach these skills.
  • Leadership in Coaching: Experience leading or coaching climbing programs with kids and/or adults is preferred.

Communication and Leadership

  • Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication with kids, parents, and co-workers, both in person and via email.
  • Leadership and Team Building: Proven ability to articulate and connect team members to ACG’s vision and values for climbing programs.

The Climbing Programs Lead will report to the General Manager and work collaboratively with the entire ACG team to achieve program goals.

  • Familiarity with climbing industry software or tools for scheduling and program management.

THE ASANA STORY

Asana began in Boise in 1999 in our founder's garage as a manufacturing company producing “Everything Bouldering”. The company grew and became the market leader in custom padding systems for climbing gyms across the US. In 2013, the company incorporated the Asana Climbing Gym to become a core part of the Treasure Valley climbing commmunity. Today, the gym is ever evolving as we are the premiere facility offering everything bouldering.
